Two WhatsApp accounts on one iPhone
A work number and a personal number, one phone. There are three honest ways to do it on iOS, and they suit different situations.
Option 1: WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business side by side
Apple allows the two official apps to run at the same time, each registered to its own phone number. If you have a second number (a second SIM, an eSIM, or a landline that can receive a verification call), install WhatsApp Business from the App Store and register the second number there. You get two independent accounts with full features, notifications and backups. The catch is the second number itself: you need one, and the Business app is meant for businesses.
Option 2: Use another account as a linked device
WhatsApp lets one account be used on up to four extra devices through Linked Devices (Settings → Linked Devices on the phone that owns the account). That is how WhatsApp Web works on a computer, and an iPhone app can play the same role. Our Dual Messenger opens a WhatsApp Web session inside the app:
- On the phone that owns the second account, open WhatsApp → Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device.
- Open Dual Messenger on your iPhone and scan the QR code it shows.
- The second account's chats appear in Dual Messenger. Lock the app with a passcode so they stay private.
This is the right choice when the second account lives on another phone (a work phone, a family member's phone, an old handset in a drawer). The owning phone does not need to stay online for the link to keep working, though WhatsApp will unlink it after about two weeks of the owning phone being off.
Option 3: a separate space for a second account
Dual App: Multiple Accounts keeps a second messaging or social login in its own passcode-locked space inside the app, using the web version of the service. It suits people who want one place for all second accounts (WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram) rather than one extra app per service.
What does not work on iPhone
iOS does not allow an app to be cloned or installed twice, and it does not allow two full WhatsApp registrations inside one app. Anything that promises a second full account without a second number or a linked device is not describing iOS.
Keeping the two apart
- Give the second account a different notification sound, or mute it outside working hours.
- Back up each account separately; a linked device does not back up the account that owns it.
- Lock whichever app holds the work chats with a passcode or Face ID.

Questions
- Do I need a second phone number?
- For Option 1, yes. For Option 2, no second number on your iPhone, but the account must already exist on another phone. For Option 3 the same applies.
- Will the second account get push notifications?
- A linked-device session receives messages while the app is open and, depending on iOS background limits, shortly after. WhatsApp Business gives full notifications because it is a native registration.
- Is this allowed by WhatsApp?
- Linked Devices is an official WhatsApp feature. Our apps use that feature through WhatsApp Web; they do not modify WhatsApp.
